PIANO LESSONS

I provide a fun, easy going and inspiring learning environment for students of all ages and skill levels from beginners right through to advanced.
I have been teaching piano and music theory/musicianship in my home studio for the past 15 years. My students consistently achieve outstanding results in both practical and written AMEB exams.

My first teacher whilst in primary and high school was Kathryn Lambert. Whilst completing my Bachelor of Music Studies degree at the Sydney Conservatorium I studied under Stephanie McCallum and graduated in 2002. Although classically trained, I love playing and teaching other styles of music as well. These range from Classical, Jazz, Pop, Film & TV and anything in between. I also have an avid interest in composing and have completed a Diploma for Film & TV Composition through the Berklee Online School of Music which is based in Boston, U.S.

I have had a lot of experience teaching children from ages 5 to 12, however all ages and skill levels are welcome. If you are interested in playing for leisure or would like to do AMEB exams I’d be happy to help you achieve your goals.

In addition, I have helped guide and prepare many of my senior high school students for their HSC Music exams, all of whom have achieved a Band 6 in Music.

My studio offers students a large comfortable space with two Yamaha acoustic pianos and a full size 88 key digital piano. Students are welcome to use this to practice (with headphones on) while they wait. The studio is equipped with professional recording equipment such as Genelec studio monitors and Rode condenser microphones which are ideal for recording for an audition or HSC Music compositions. The recording programs that I use are Cubase 7 and Pro Tools 11.

For those students that may find it difficult to travel or prefer to learn from the comfort of their own home, I also provide lessons via Skype. These lessons however are more suitable for intermediate to advanced level students as it is important for beginners to have face to face lessons in order for technique to be corrected and monitored closely by the teacher.

The teaching that I provide to students is of a high standard and stems from the Russian School of piano playing which has a strong focus on technique and a careful approach to musical phrasing and expression. My aim is to inspire students to play the piano with a beautiful singing tone and to help them bring the music to life. I encourage my students to have fun and to be consistent with their practice.

For students between the ages of about 5 to 11 it is essential that parents guide their child during practice time at home throughout the early stages of learning as this will instill good practice habits from a young age. For parents with little or no musical knowledge I will work with you and offer straight forward advice and tips on how you can help your child with his or her practice at home.

In addition to one on one lessons I provide a weekly webcam help session where students can jump online and ask me questions on any particular problems that they may be having at home during practice.
