Music is a social activity and something that should be able to be carried on throughout life with enjoyment. As a child, I was incredibly envious of my friends who learned the guitar – they were able to play their favourite songs and sing them with their friends, they were forming bands in their school lunch breaks, and more importantly, they were having fun playing music.
I have taught many adult students who have decided to revisit piano after being disenchanted as a child, forced to learn pieces of music hundreds of years old and never developing the skills to be a social musician. Unlike the guitarist whose performance is contributed to by the voices around them, performing on the piano was usually a solitary experience, playing a piece of music that their peers had no engagement with. It certainly wasn’t cool.
I truly believe that the piano is the most versatile instrument in the world. It covers the biggest pitch range, able to be whisper quiet or thunderously loud, and has featured in popular music since its creation. In the last 60 years, artists such as Jerry Lee Lewis, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Billy Joel, Freddie Mercury, and Ben Folds have showcased how the piano can be an integral and exciting part of pop and rock music, yet it’s incredibly rare to find a teacher who can explore and develop similar techniques and, most importantly, instill the same sense of joy that these performers radiate when they play.
