I graduated from Brisbane Girls Grammar School in 2015 and am currently studying a Bachelor of Music in Composition at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Alongside this, I have had a lot of experience in my particular instruments, flute and piano, and also in music theory.
In 2015, I was the principal flautist of our school’s Symphony Orchestra, and top band, Symphonic Winds, and also played piano in the intermediate jazz ensemble, Stage Band. At our school’s annual Cathedral and Gala concerts, I was a featured soloist and played to over 2,000 people in total, around 1,500 of that at the Gala concert. I competed in the annual solo Woodwind Competition in which I received 1st place, and continued to the semi-final and grand final stages; where I performed to around 150 people. I was also the Band Captain, and looked after 14 bands; concert bands, percussion ensembles, jazz ensembles, and contemporary ensemble. For the first time in the history of the school, I had the privilege to be chosen to have a one-on-one workshop with Dr Ralph Hultgren in the art of conducting, which then lead to another first in the history of the school; conducting the visiting band from Taiwan, and two of our school ensembles in an intimate concert for family and friends.
In 2014, I was awarded the Friends of Girls Grammar Bursary for Outstanding Performance in the Arts and used the money to have composing lessons with Dr Robert Davidson.
As a part of a school-based program, I attended the biannual Australian Combined Schools Music Festival in Melbourne last year, in which I was the principal flautist in the festival Symphony Orchestra. I was also the principal flautist in the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) in 2015 in the Peter Sculthorpe Symphony Orchestra, which combined the top musicians in Queensland.
I attended the Young Conservatorium – a music program for junior and high school students at the Queensland Conservatorium – for 5 years; the first of which being in the Wind Ensemble when I was in grade 6, then I was fortunate enough to be offered a place in the Flute Ensemble – a high school program – for grade 7 due to my playing abilities and maturity.
In August 2016, I was the flautist in ‘‘Singfest’‘ which is an annual massed choral event for State School Primary students, organised by the Music Resource Centre, in which I performed in concerts for 4 nights, working alongside choral conductor and composer, Timothy Sherlock, and accomplished accompanist and pianist, Kylie Los.
For many years, I have consistently competed in the Enoggera Eisteddfods, where I have received 1st place in both flute and piano.
I have attended many flute, piano, composing, musical theatre, and general music workshops, and also participated in the Southern Cross Soloists Winter Music School in Rockhampton, one year of which being the principal flute and piccolo player in the band and orchestra.
In addition to my instrumental music life, as a composer, I have written an Easter piece for Grovely State School’s 2016 Easter concert, a concert band piece for ‘‘Queensland Wind and Brass’‘ for their second major concert of 2016 (which premiered on the 10th of September), and the score to a short film called ‘‘The Wanderer’‘ by Joel Stephen Fleming, which was premiered at the ‘‘Vision Splendid Outback Film Festival’‘ on the 2nd of July 2016 in Winton, Queensland.
I have studied flute for 9 years, and piano for 11 years. I am currently doing my A.Mus.A in flute, grade 8 in piano, and have completed all 6 grades of music theory.
I am now looking forward to passing on my knowledge and skills to my students and helping them achieve their dreams in music, just as my teachers have helped me and continue to help and mentor me to achieve mine.
