Piano Lessons

James is an exciting and passionate piano teacher who provides a positive learning experience in which each individual student is able to excel at their own pace.

Having played the piano since a very young age, he has gained some valuable experience and knowledge on music performance which he looks to pass on to anybody who is keen on learning.

James teaches students of any age and ability. He offers comprehensive preparation for AMEB exams at all levels (practical and leisure streams), which includes teaching his students music theory and general knowledge where pertinent. He also helps to prepare students for VCE Music Performance, for both the performance and aural exams.

In his lessons, close attention is paid to technique and musicality. James is a firm believer that developing a sound technique during the early stages of learning will reap rewards when advancing to higher levels. At the same time, however, an enjoyment and appreciation of the nuances of music-making is crucial to making a good performance great. James will always try his very best to ensure that both goals are met.

James holds lessons at his house in Templestowe Lower. Alternatively, he is happy to travel anywhere in the vicinity of Templestowe Lower or Monash University Clayton Campus. His rates are $35 for half hour lessons, $50 for 45 minute lessons, and $65 for hourly lessons.

James is able to communicate in English, Mandarin and Shanghainese. He holds a current Working with Children Check.

James Zong

James is an Australian pianist, accompanist and music teacher, currently pursuing a double degree of Bachelor of Music/Laws at Monash University, Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music. He is currently under the tutelage of internationally recognised concert pianist and pedagogue Len Vorster.

James started playing the piano in 2001. From 2009 to 2010, he attended the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School. James completed the latter part of his secondary education at Melbourne High School. He became one of the School Pianists at both the junior and senior levels. This role included accompanying 700 boys at weekly assembly, as well as performing different solo piano works on an almost weekly basis. In each of his four years at Melbourne High, James featured as the soloist for his house (Como House, yellow) in the House Instrumental and Choral Competition held at Melbourne Town Hall. In his final year in 2014, his performance of Franz Liszt’s 10th Hungarian Rhapsody delivered an almost perfect, school record score of 59/60.

His excellence in piano performance was recognised by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority during the latter stages of his secondary education, when he topped the whole state of Victoria in the VCE subject of Music Performance with a perfect score of 50, which consequently won him the Premier’s Award. This also lead to a public performance opportunity with Top Class, where James made his debut at the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall in the Melbourne Recital Centre.

In recent times, James has performed live on The Talent, a series broadcast on 3MBS Fine Music Melbourne radio (103.5FM). He has also performed publicly at venues including the Melbourne Town Hall, the Supreme Court of Victoria Library, the Abbotsford Convent, Duneira Estate, and both the Elisabeth Murdoch Hall and the Salon at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Past achievements include being awarded the Associate in Music (AMusA) and the Licentiate in Music (LMusA) by the Australian Music Examinations Board. His recent excellence in university studies has been recognised by the Monash University Faculty of Arts through the Jascha Spivakovsky Prize, the Joan Earle Prize, and the Cengage Western Music Theory Prize.
