Kimberly W. Y. Mak

Kimberly founded her own music studio in Canterbury in 2013.

Kimberly has completed her double degree, Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music, at the University of Melbourne in 2011. With majors in Voice, Piano, German and Theatre Studies, she undertook a year-long exchange programme to the University of Vienna (Uni Wien) to further her studies. She has been working as a piano and voice teacher for 9 years now, alongside her lead singer position at the Immaculate Conception Church Hawthorn and some freelance accompaniment and wedding performance. In 2014, she performed as a pianist in cabaret-flavoured Viet Kieu in the Fringe Festival, which received excellent reviews from The Age and The Guardian. She was also a choral scholar at the Scot’s Church for two years.

As a highly active singer and actress, Kimberly is very much devoted to theatre productions. She sang in the chorus of The Mikado with Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Victoria in 2012. In 2011, she was an intern for Eagle’s Nest Theatre, a reviewer and was also on the board of Award Committees for Union House Theatre. Earlier that year she assisted in producing the German musical Alles Plastik with the Germanic Players. She also played the role of Frau Fink in Alles Plastik. In 2009 and 2010, she was involved in the Melbourne Fringe Festival and worked with the award winning composer and sound artist Kelly Ryall.

Kimberly was under the instruction of internationally acclaimed mezzo soprano Liane Keegan, and she has previously studied with distinguished soprano Merlyn Quaife and German mezzo-soprano Julia Nafisi. Kimberly particularly has a passion for German Lieder. In 2009, Kimberly competed in the National Liederfest. Along with singing, she has also been studying piano with eminent pianists Benjamin Martin and Mark Kruger at the university.

Back in her hometown Hong Kong, Kimberly has sung with Hong Kong Voices, Hong Kong Melody Makers and the Hong Kong Children’s Choir (HKCC). In HKCC, she played one of the lead roles, Nanny Sue, in the 35th anniversary musical Hong Kong Rocks, and she has performed overseas regularly with the HKCC Chamber Choir.

Kimberly wishes to share with her students the same joy she experiences from music playing and performing. Her philosophy is to inspire students with an enjoyable learning environment leaving them eager for the next lesson.
