Leana Critchell

Leana Critchell began playing piano at the age of five. While classically trained she has also delved deeply into the jazz scene, majoring in jazz at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, playing on the world stage at Shanghai’s 2010 world expo on tenor saxophone with a Brisbane Big Band and doing various regional tours with the QYO big band on both piano and saxophone.

Since 2012, Leana has been studying with the founder and co-founder of the Golandsky institute, Edna Golandsky and John Bloomfield in New York as well as Dr Therese Milanovic, The Southern Hemisphere’s only certified Taubman instructor.

Through her teaching, Leana instills in her students the principles of the Taubman Approach which is a coordinate technique allowing pianists to play in the most efficient, virtuosic and effortless way possible. Through her continued study at Princeton University, New York, with the Golandsky Institute, Leana plans on becoming the first certified practitioner of the Taubman Approach to jazz in Australia to offer a wider technical facility to improvising musicians as well as to assist in the recovery of injured musicians.

On the side, Leana is the keyboardist for the up and coming, all female, pop/rap band Sneeky Picnic which has already debuted at the last two Big Day Out festivals as well as being nominated at the Australian Independent Music Awards in 2013. Their 4 track EP is soon to be released with talk of a national tour in 2014.
