Matthew Schwarz

Known for his energy and enthusiasm both on and off of the podium, Matthew Schwarz has established himself amongst a handful of young Australian conductors and is currently serving as the Chief Conductor of the Queensland Philharmonia Orchestra and Music Director of the Brisbane Concert Orchestra.

Realising a passion for orchestral music at a young age, Matthew went on to study composition and conducting at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, devoting his time to the late classical and romantic repertoire under the mentorship of conductors such as John Curro, Guy Noble and Peter Morris.

Through his studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Matthew gained a conducting internship with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and was mentored by numerous conductors including Johannes Fritzsch, Vassilis Christopoulos and Peter Luff.

Other recent engagements include a season as Chief Conductor for the Queensland University of Technology’s annual dance showcase, recordings with the Queensland Ballet as part of the Jette Parker young artist programme as well as guest appearances at the World Forum on Music and 2014: Holden State of Origin.

Matthew has also worked as a repetiteur, orchestrator, arranger and pianist for several musical theatre productions in Brisbane – the most recent being ‘The Phantom of the Opera!’ and ‘Little Women’.
