I have always wanted to make music accessible to as many young musicians as possible. So what better way than to create an encouraging music community, where young people can learn and share, be themselves, and become the best musicians they can be?

That’s the kind of community we have at the Mellanie Shaylor School of Music. We welcome all students who love music, and love to learn. Some learn simply for their own pleasure, and we encourage that at every level. Some choose to follow a more formal pathway, and we prepare them for AMEB and ANZCA exams.

Performance is a great way for students to enjoy and share what they have learned. We make sure there are plenty of opportunities each year. The Mid Year and End of Year Concerts are always sell-out events (and my personal favourites). To see our students – including our tiny two year-olds – performing for their families, friends, and our whole music community, is an absolute joy.

Musical performance is also a way to be part of the local community. Our regular ‘mini concerts’, at Day Centres for seniors in the Banyule area, are good examples. Not only do my young musicians provide delightful entertainment for the elderly people, but they also gain so much for themselves. The excitement of the occasion, the opportunity for performing, and the pleasure of seeing the positive impact their playing has on others, are experiences that are valuable beyond measure.
