CLASSICAL PIANO – AMEB PIANOFORTE
When learning classical piano, patience, discipline and practice are important attributes in ensuring the pieces are played well and enjoyable to listen to. It is with classical music that students can gain the added advantage of knowing music theory outside your school’s classroom. A great instrument and style to explore and you can even start from as young as 4 years old.
It’s another popular instrument to play and learn especially from a young age. Classical piano can take years of practice to master, but most certainly it’s a great way to get good grades in music class!
CONTEMPORARY / MODERN PIANO
Contemporary / moden piano playing encompasses the various styles of pop, rock, jazz, blues and musical theatre. Whether you’re looking to play solo, accompany singers, play in a band, write songs or for pure pleasure, we’ll structure a program that suits your outcome.
When learning contemporary / modern piano, you’ll be taught how to read music, play scales, riffs, chords, voicings, improvisation, solo-ing and much more. Whether you’re looking to be a professional soloist, play in a band or for loved ones, a comprehensive outline and practice regime will be established.

Sandra Lie
My name is Sandra Lie and I’m a friendly, professional guitar, piano and theory teacher currently located in Sydney’s Inner West, NSW. With over 14 years of classical/acoustic guitar and piano experience I offer individually tailored lessons to both children and adults, 4yrs and above. Lessons are held at my home teaching studio in Erskineville.
I also became involved in the music industry not only as a musician and teacher, but have worked in the music and entertainment business scene after I studied my Bachelor of Music at AIM (Australian Institute of Music) where I majored in Entertainment Management and Marketing. Since finishing my qualifications with the AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) in both classical guitar and classical piano, I went on to further my musical skills with contemporary/pop guitar and piano at AIM and have since performed in my own bands; The Guff and Oxford and Crown, as well as doing covers.
My specialty is teaching beginner and intermediate students who want to play classical, pop, jazz, acoustic or a mixture of all styles. I work with both kids and adults, ages five and up. My formal training, patience and experience has allowed me to love teaching students of all ages, and I especially enjoy working with children.
My approach is to teach you want you want to learn, and my philosophy in learning music is to ensure that it is fun, productive and educational. Learning any musical instrument no matter what age you are can feel awkward and foreign so it helps to have a teacher who’ll want to make you feel confident and relaxed while you’re learning.
* LEARN THE SONGS YOU LOVE – it’s important before our initial lesson we talk about the music you like and would eventually like to play. I then design a course of study that will teach you the fundamentals of playing by teaching you the songs you’d most enjoy.
* IT’S NOT TOO EASY AND IT’S NOT TOO HARD – you’re always going to be learning new things on your instrument and it’s important to understand that building knowledge from the ground up requires patience and attention to progress. I make sure you learn A before I teach B
* PROGRESS WITH GRADES – no matter what age you are and what instrument you learn doing grades and sitting for annual exams to progress onto the next grade is a rewarding and highly educational approach to learning music. I ensure that students learn and practice according to the syllabus and are well prepared for when they sit for an exam, such as the AMEB. You’ll feel confident that you will do well and so will I.
