The aim of this music school is to provide good and effective music teaching. To that end, the Musical Director, Jan Thorp, and Senior Teacher, Eleanor McPhee have been undertaking research and speak at international music conferences on this topic.

We provide group lessons for beginners plus private teaching, from beginner to diploma standard, for almost all orchestral instruments (overseen by our senior teachers). Our wind ensemble is run by a specialist jazz musician who teaches all members to improvise.

Our ethos has always been to challenge students to apply what they learn in their private lessons to musical performance in groups. to that end, we encourage students on private lessons to join our senior or junior Concert Bands, String Ensembles, Jazz Band or Orchestra because all Western Musical Instruments have been designed to be played in emsembles.

We have Early Childhood Music Classes for 4 to 7 year olds. The private lessons and instrumental groups are for 7 year olds and up, unless they have successfully previously completed our Early Music Classess.
